New Biosolids Sampling Requirements

PFAS Sampling Now Required for Land Disposal of Biosolids

What's New?

Attention, wastewater treatment plant operators! There are new requirements in place regarding sampling and land application of biosolids. Biosolids, often disposed of through land application, must now be tested for Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

What Does it Mean?

EGLE has established sampling techniques and acceptable thresholds for these chemicals. If it is intended to land apply biosolids, the biosolids must first be sampled for PFAS.

The frequency of sampling varies depending on the WWTP's USEPA category and if there is an Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP). Results must be evaluated prior to being injected to determine if they meet these new standards.

What Now?

First things first. We can help with the initial sampling, including lab selection, sampling methods, and sample collections.

Once sampling is complete, we can help with interpretation of results to determine next steps.

If the analytical results of the samples are at or above 50 ug/Kg (ppb) PFOS, our scientists and engineers can complete effluent sampling and investigation of potential sources.
