PIPELINE RELEASE REMEDIATION AND CLOSURE

Manistee County, MI

Following the rupture of a three-inch diameter flowline under a county roadway , Gosling Czubak undertook assessment activities to determine the extent of the contamination in both soils and groundwater.

Based on the installation of soil borings and monitor wells, it was determined that while the soils were impacted underneath the roadway and right-of-way, the local groundwater was not impacted. Shallow contaminated soils were excavated and disposed at a landfill. Deeper (> 18’) soils could not be safely excavated; therefore a Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) remediation system with a catalytic oxidizer was designed, installed and operated.

After only four months of the SVE system operation, Gosling Czubak performed in-situ verification of soil remediation (VSR) soil borings to document cleanup goals had been achieved. Subsequently, the site received closure by the MDEQ.
